feel the real essence of darjeeling
If you do not like to stay in busy and crowded downtown Darjeeling yet you want to stay closer to
the town you can choose the recluse of Arya Tea Resort.
Arya Tea Estate in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India is a manufacturer of specialty
teas for international sale. The estate sits at an average altitude of 1500 metres and covers 125
hectares, with just over 300 acres (1.2 - 2 km) under tea plantation.
The Arya Tea Estate was established in 1885 and was originally known as ‘Sidrabong’. Legend
tells that the garden was founded by Buddhist monks who developed and cultivated different
varieties of Chinese seed. The house inhabited by the monks in the 19th century can still be
found on the estate.
The original factory was destroyed by a fire in May 1999, leading to the construction of a new
factory costing USD 350,000.
As you drive from Bagdogra airport or NJP station towards Darjeeling after crossing Sanga Choeling Monastry look for Ava Art gallery. From that point a steep winding road drives down to Arya resort building. It is about 5 km drive from there. It takes a bit longer because of the rough road. Good news is a new road is being built and near completion which will reduce the driving time and improve driving comfort significantly.
The resort building is newly constructed 2 storied building with tastefully done interior and
modern facilities. There are 6 double bed rooms available for stay. Each room has attached toilet
with modern facilities. Rooms have large windows. There is a lounge in each floor which has
glass walls to get a view of Kanchenjungha range while you can enjoy the warmth inside sitting in
a cosy corner and sip Arya Garden’s world famous Diamond, Ruby or Pearl tea.
You can enjoy your morning or evening tea sitting in the lawn and enjoy the picturesque view of
the snow capped ranges, or the Arya tea plantations stretching over an area of 300 acres. You
can also see other tea gardens such as Happy Valley on your left and Singtom tea estate on the
opposite side of the hills. At night you can see the string of lights crowning the Darjeeling town.
